Publications on Young People

The Adolescent Peer Organised Network (APON) project grew out of a large Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) programme aimed at providing basic education to underprivileged children, especially girls, who have not previously attended primary school.

This Publication is a compilation of twenty six programme interventions, including eight in-depth case studies. It is designed to serve as a resource for policy makers, programmers, advocates, community organisations, UNICEF staff and partners.

This study aimed to estimate the magnitude of the STI problem in the general population and to provide data to improve RTI/STI case management guidelines.

UNICEF Headquarters has collected data on Lifeskills education through schools in about 40 countries (including some large States) which is to be used as a baseline to monitor progress toward the UNICEF Medium Term Strategic Priorities (MTSP).

At the International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo in September 1994 and its subsequent review in 1999 (ICPD+5), 179 countries agreed that population and development are inextricably linked, and that empowering women and meeting people’s needs for education and health, including reproductive health, are necessary for both individual advancement and balanced development.

The School-based Healthy Living and HIV/AIDS Prevention Education (SHAPE) curriculum was officially launched in 1998. The parallel Ministry of Education Life Skills Secondary School Curriculum was subsequently launched in the year 2000, with additional topics to comply with updated School Health objectives.

At its best, Life skills-based education is simply good quality education, the principles of which can be used to explore a range of topics, however in UNICEF social and health issues are usually the topics explored.

This report contains important new data about why young people are key to defeating the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, including results from more than 60 new national surveys. It reaffirms that we must accord top priority to making investments in the well-being of young people and to engaging them in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Voluntary HIV counseling and testing (VCT) is much more than drawing and testing blood and offering a few counseling sessions. It is a vital point of entry to other HIV/AIDS services, including prevention and clinical management of HIV-related illnesses, TB control, psychosocial and legal support, and prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV.

The inter-regional workshop ‘Young people, HIV/ AIDS, Drug and Substance Use in Asia’ organized jointly by the UNICEF East Asia and the Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO) and the Regional Office for South Asia (ROSA), in collaboration with UNDCP Regional office for South Asia, took place in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 18 – 22 March 2002.
