The purpose of this document is to provide clear and actionable guidance for safe operations through the prevention, early detection and control of COVID-19 in schools and other educational facilities. The guidance, while specific to countries that have already confirmed the transmission of COVID-19, is relevant in all other contexts. Education can encourage students to become advocates for disease prevention and control at home, in school and in their community by talking to others about how to prevent the spread of viruses.

National and international leaders’ commitment to girls’ education has been gathering momentum since 2015, when UN member states adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG4 (to “ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning”) and SDG5 (to “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls” by 2030). At the same time, evidence about barriers to girls’ education, in particular for marginalised girls, is growing, along with a consensus on “what works” to advance girls’ education.

In 2018: 54% of new HIV infections were among key populations and their sexual partners, 40% decrease in new HIV infections since the peak in 1997, 37.9 million people living with HIV in the world, 1 700 000 children living with HIV (under 15 years).

This 2019 edition of The State of the World’s Children (SOWC) examines the issue of children, food and nutrition, providing a fresh perspective on a rapidly evolving challenge. Despite progress in the past two decades, one third of children under age 5 are malnourished – stunted, wasted or overweight – while two thirds are at risk of malnutrition and hidden hunger because of the poor quality of their diets. At the center of this challenge is a broken food system that fails to provide children with the diets they need to grow healthy.

This edition of UNICEF’s report on requirements for humanitarian action highlights major emergencies affecting children and families around the world, and the results achieved by UNICEF and partners in response to those crises. Noting that more violent conflicts are raging today than at any time since the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child 30 years ago, the report also describes UNICEF initiatives to improve the quality of its humanitarian response in 2019 – particularly in high-threat contexts.

2018 was an extraordinary year for PMNCH, with the diversity of our work showcased at the 2018 Partners’ Forum. Other achievements included our work in a number of EWEC focus areas, country engagement, accountability, political engagement and resource mobilization. The Board and Executive Committee also adopted the PMNCH 2018-2020 Business Plan.
