amfAR’s TREAT Asia program and three partner organizations initiated two Community Treatment Observatories (CTOs) to assess availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality of services for HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) in India and Indonesia. It is hoped that the resulting analysis, available here, will help inform and advance advocacy priorities aimed at improving and expanding access to HIV and HCV services in the two countries. 

 

The HIV/AIDS pandemic continues to have a devastating, though often invisible, impact on gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) around the world. In low and middle-income countries, MSM are 19 times more likely to be living with HIV than people in the general population and they represent an estimated 10 percent of new infections each year. Yet for decades the epidemic among MSM was officially ignored by governments, donors, and whole societies.

This report summarizes an assessment that was carried out in early 2009 to identify priorities for operations research to better understand effective models for HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support among MSM in Asia and the Pacific.

HCV has been described as a “dual epidemic” with HIV because it is highly prevalent in HIV-endemic areas and it disproportionately affects vulnerable populations that also have a high risk of developing HIV infection—especially in Asia and Eastern Europe.

In this brief, we review drug pricing for new hepatitis C medications and pose basic questions of fairness and medical ethics.

Highlighting existing data on the state of the trans* movement and the level of current investments by GFATM, PEPFAR, and other funders for HIV-focused trans* service delivery, advocacy, and research efforts at the local and national levels.
