Women and men at higher risk

Exporting migrant workers is part of the Vietnamese government’s mandate, with a target of 75,000 workers per year, increasing to 100,000 by 2010. In 2006, Vietnam sent out 78,855 migrant workers, 35% of whom were female.

Given its porous borders and tough economic conditions, Pakistan faces a variety of migration issues. According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, at least 450,000 people migrate each year, of whom 300,000 resort to irregular means.

India is one of the major sending countries of migrant laborers in Asia. It is estimated that around 15 million Indians live abroad, and hundreds of thousands migrate each year for work.

Migration dynamics have evolved rapidly in Thailand over the past few decades, with Thailand moving from a labor‐exporting country to a labor‐importing country.

This publication is based on the experience of the authors and of other researchers and programme developers with various migrant populations in Israel in HIV/AIDS prevention and the related fields of sexual health and sex education.

During the last two decades the number of newly identified cases and those with AIDS have been rising steadily. It is estimated that there are 7,500 people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the country.

Various surveys and studies (e.g. Barbora et al., 2008; Theime, 2006) reveal that migrants are disadvantaged relative to the native population in terms of employment, education and health.

With rapid and steady economic growth since the mid 1980s, the South Korean work force is increasingly avoiding the so-called 3D (difficult, dirty, and dangerous) jobs, causing an imbalance in the supply and demand of labor. This situation has attracted a great number of migrant workers to the Republic of Korea since the late 1980s.

The primary objectives of this study were to assess the level of knowledge of HIV/AIDS in the Sri Lankan military and the extent to which personnel were engaged in risky sexual behaviours.

In 2002 the Indonesian Ministry of Health, with ASA/FHI/USAID conducted a National Estimates of Adult HIV Infection. Those estimates were a great step to estimate the magnitude of burden diseases in the future.
