
The first HIV-positive case was reported in the country in 1990 and the first AIDS case in 1992. Since then, the number of HIV and AIDS cases has grown and – by the end of 2009 – 8,500 people were estimated to be living with HIV, up from less than 1,000 in 2001 (Fig. 1). The estimated number of women infected with HIV increased from <500 in 2001 to 3,500 in 2009. In 2009, HIV prevalence was estimated to be 0.2% among adults (aged 15-49), 0.1% among young men (aged 15-24) and 0.2% among young women (aged 15-24). Download this document.
