In order to design evidence-based interventions among the young people, it is essential to understand the levels of knowledge about HIV/AIDS, attitude and sexual behaviour of young people. Behavioural Surveillance Surveys (BSS) are internationally standardised tools used for understanding the knowledge, attitude and behaviour of populations. Undertaking BSS among Youth is an important effort by NACO and UNICEF to monitor changes in behavioural aspects of young people who are vulnerable to HIV infection. The aim of the study is to provide a baseline for the interventions among the young people supported by NACO and UNICEF. The study will be repeated periodically for trend analysis, which will indicate the impact of the interventions as well generate invaluable information about behaviour and life style of young people in the country. In the early 2000s, the government of the newly–independent nation of East Timor (Timor Leste or Timor Lorosae) expressed concern about the possibility of an epidemic of HIV developing in the country. High levels of poverty and social disruption that resulted from the conflict surrounding independence, combined with the presence of several thousand peacekeepers and other international personnel, many of them from countries with high HIV prevalence, led the country to develop a national AIDS strategy. Pakistan at present is categorized as "Low-Prevalence High Risk" country for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. According to the National AIDS Control Programme/Ministry of Health estimates using WHO/UNAIDS Epiforecast model the number of HIV infected individuals in Pakistan at the end of 2005 are between 70-80, 000 in a total population of 157 million, with a prevalence of 0.1% among general population. |
