Transmission of HIV beyond the core risk groups (reservoirs) depends on the patterns of mixing between the core group and other members of the population (Anderson et al. 1991; Morris 1995). Young people play a critical bridging role for HIV transmission, as they usually have more sexual partners (Morris et al. 1996).
