Globally, an estimated 17 million women and girls are living with HIV, and more than two million pregnancies occur amongst HIV-positive women each year. In 2009, an estimated 370,000 children acquired HIV. While the total number of children being born with HIV has decreased due to the increased access to services that support women living with HIV to have HIV-free babies (usually referred to as prevention of mother-to-child transmission to PMTCT), the majority of remaining cases occur in resource-poor nations.

National HIV serosurveillance data for Vietnam have indicated a steady increase in the prevalence of HIV. This trend has been particularly noticeable among injecting drug users (10.1% in 1996 to 32% in 2002) and female sex workers (FSWs) (0.6% in 1994 to 6.6% in 2002).

The prevalence of HIV/sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) was determined, the risk characteristics examined, and factors associated with HIV infection identified among noninstitutionalized female sex workers (FSWs), using a cross-sectional survey with 2-stage cluster sampling.

STI/HIV: Consensus Report on STI, HIV and AIDS Epidemiology- Viet Nam. WHO (2002) There has already been extensive HIV spread among injecting drug users (IDUs) in Viet Nam. But the country is still at the early phase of a heterosexual HIV epidemic, with low HIV prevalence among sex workers (CSWs) and very low HIV prevalence among the general population. By 13 August 1998, 9 941 HIV-positive cases had been reported by 59 of the 61 provinces in Viet Nam. Of these reported infections, 65.3% were among injecting drug users, and mainly among males. A total of 1 207 AIDS cases had been reported, 641 of them died.

HIV counselling and testing for pregnant women is a key factor for successful prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV. Women’s access to testing can be improved by scaling up the distribution of this service at all levels of health facilities. However, this strategy will only be effective if pregnant women are tested early and provided enough counselling.
