This report was compiled under the guidance of the Kiribati Country Coordination Mechanism for HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) and Tuberculosis (TB) (CCM) and reporting was led by the Government of Kiribati Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) HIV & STI Unit. Data was collected and validated in a consultative and participative process involving government, non-government and civil society stakeholders. Litmus Ltd. provided technical support to the MHMS HIV & STI Unit throughout the reporting process, including data collection, analysis and validation, and drafting the narrative Country Progress Report.

The Republic of Kiribati is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean comprised of 32 atolls and one island (Banaba). Although the islands are widely dispersed over 3,500,000 square kilometres, it is estimated that one third of the population reside on one island, South Tarawa, the capital of Kiribati. The local people are known as I Kiribati and are of Micronesian ethnicity.

The 2009 Kiribati Demographic and Health Survey was the first survey in phase two of Pacific DHS Project with funding support from ADB. The primary objective of this survey was to provide up-to-date information for policy-makers, planners, researchers and programme managers, for use in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating population and health programmes within the country. The survey was intended to provide key estimates of Kiribati’s demographic and health situation. |
