Update on the HIV/AIDS Situation in Singapore 2010. Ministry of Health Singapore (2010)

‪In 2010, another 441 Singapore residents 1 were newly reported with HIV infection. About 91% of the new cases were males and 9% were females. This brings the total number of Singaporeans living with HIV to 4,845 as of end 2010. As at 31 Dec 2010, 2,319 persons are asymptomatic carriers, 1,137 have or have had AIDSrelated illnesses and 1,389 have died.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) remains an important public health challenge in Singapore. The number of newly diagnosed HIV-infected cases has been steadily increasing over the past decade, mirroring the trend in other Asian countries.

In response to the rapid increase in HIV infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people in developed Asia, the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) launched its ‘Metropolitan Man Initiative’ in 2010 to support civil society organizations in the region to respond to issues related to men’s sexual health, including HIV.

In collaboration with various community-based organisations, APN+ conducted a peer-led mixed method research project in six Asian countries (India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, and Singapore) to document the range of services available for
MSM and transgender people living with HIV and to identify barriers to access and use of these services.

In 2011, a total of 461 Singapore residents were newly reported to have HIV infection, an increase of 4.5% compared to 441 cases in 2010 (Table 6.1). This brings the cumulative total number of HIV/AIDS infections among residents since the first case was diagnosed in 1985 to 5,306.
