cover-coming-soon In the early 2000s, the government of the newly–independent nation of East Timor (Timor Leste or Timor Lorosae) expressed concern about the possibility of an epidemic of HIV developing in the country. High levels of poverty and social disruption that resulted from the conflict surrounding independence, combined with the presence of several thousand peacekeepers and other international personnel, many of them from countries with high HIV prevalence, led the country to develop a national AIDS strategy.

The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (2011) Prevention is an essential component of PEPFAR’s balanced approach to addressing the global AIDS epidemic. In December 2009, PEPFAR released its Second Five-Year Strategy, which outlined priorities and plans for its prevention programs across the countries where it implements activities.

National Behavioural Surveillance Survey (BSS) 2006: Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) and Injecting Drug Users (IDUs). National AIDS Control Organisation (2008) The aim of carrying out the National BSS 2006 was to assess current risk behaviour in specific population groups in India and to develop a database so as to measure behavioural changes from National BSS 2001 to National BSS 2006. The present report would provide the detailed findings of BSS 2006 conducted among two high-risk population groups of IDUs and MSM, about their awareness, knowledge, attitude and behaviour with regards to STD/HIV/AIDS.

Vietnam: HIV/AIDS TRaC Study among Injecting Drug Users in Mong Cai, Uong Bi, and Thai Nguyen City. DFID and PSI (2006)

Funded through AusAID’s Australian Development Research Awards (2009), the Burnet Institute conducted this research to explore the sexual networks of men who have sex with both men and women in  Vientiane, Lao PDR. The research aimed to identify network characteristics that promote or block HIV transmission in this network. The qualitative research component aimed to explore the reasons why men have sex with both women and men, the context in which these interactions occur (in terms of meeting partners, negotiation of sex, and where the sex act occurs) and how place and time impact on the choice of partner and or condom use (the intersection of why and where).

Full Report IBBS MSM 2007 Final

This report documents the findings of the second round of IBBS conducted among 400 MSM in the Kathmandu Valley. The primary objective of the study was to collect strategic information to analyze trends in risk behavior and HIV/STI prevalence rates among MSM.

Of Transgender and Sin in Asia. Winter  S (2006)

In the last two decades, ‘concentrated epidemics’ of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have established in several high risk groups in Pakistan, including Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) and among men who have sex with men (MSM). To explore the transmission patterns of HIV infection in these major high-risk groups of Pakistan, 76 HIV samples were analyzed from MSM, their female spouses and children, along with 26 samples from a previously studied cohort of IDUs.

In response to the rapid increase in HIV infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people in developed Asia, the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) launched its ‘Metropolitan Man Initiative’ in 2010 to support civil society organizations in the region to respond to issues related to men’s sexual health, including HIV.
