The primary focus of the 2011 NDHS was to provide estimates of key population and health indicators, including fertility and mortality rates, for the country as a whole and for urban and rural areas separately. In addition, the sample was designed to provide estimates of most key variables for the 13 ecodevelopment regions (stratums). |

The 2006-07 Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS) is the largest householdbased survey ever conducted in Pakistan. Teams visited 972 sample points across Pakistan and collected data from a nationally representative sample of over 95,000 households. Such a large sample size was required to measure the maternal mortality ratio at the national level. In fact, this is the first survey that provides direct estimates of the maternal mortality ratio at the national level. |

| The Republic of Indonesia, which consists of approximately 17,000 islands, is located between 6 degrees north and 11 degrees south latitude, and from 95 to 141 degrees east longitude. The Indonesian archipelago lies between Asia and Australia. It is bounded by the South China Sea in the north, the Pacific Ocean in the north and east, and the Indian Ocean in the south and west. There are five major islands: Sumatera in the west; Java in the south; Kalimantan straddling the equator; Sulawesi, which resembles the letter “K”; and Papua bordering Papua New Guinea on the east. Two remaining groups of islands are Maluku and Nusa Tenggara, running from Sulawesi to Papua in the north and from Bali to Timor in the south. Other islands are small and mostly uninhabited. More than 80 percent of Indonesia’s territory is covered with water; the land area is about 1.9 million square kilometers. The large number of islands and their dispersion over a wide area has given rise to a diverse culture and hundreds of ethnic groups, each with its own language. The main purpose of the 2002-2003 IDHS is to provide policymakers and program managers with detailed information on fertility, family planning, childhood and adult mortality, maternal and child health, and knowledge of and attitudes related to HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. |

 | The 2009-10 Timor-Leste Demographic and Health Survey (TLDHS) is the second nationallevel population and health survey conducted in Timor-Leste and the first conducted as part of the global Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) program. The sample for the survey was selected independently in every stratum, through a twostage selection process, to provide estimates for each of the 13 districts and for both urban and rural areas of the country. The 2009-10 TLDHS was designed to cover a nationally representative sample of residential households, taking into account nonresponse; to obtain completed interviews of women age 15-49 in every selected household; and to obtain completed interviews of men age 15-49 in every third selected household.  | The Republic of Maldives is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean located 600 km south of India. Its islands extend from latitude 0° 42 ' 24 " S of the equator to 7 ° 6 ' 35 " N. It consists of 1,192 small islands that form a chain, about 820 km long and 120 km wide, within an area of 90,000 sq km. Only 196 of the islands are officially inhabited, although another 84 islands are used as resorts, and 14 islands serve an industrial purpose. The capital of Malé, with an area of about 2 sq km, accommodates one-third of the country's population of about 300,000. The total land area is estimated to be 300 sq km, of which only 10 percent are suitable for agriculture. Download this publication |
