Science and Technical Advisory Group (STAG) Members

The Evidence to Action AIDS Data Hub is guided by an Interagency and Partners Committee comprising UNICEF, UNAIDS, WHO and ADB as well as a Science and Technical Advisory Group (STAG). The latter comprises 15 members, representing a cross-section of countries and expertise in the region, to provide scientific and technical guidance in the analysis, collation, and dissemination of regional and country level data.

Members of the STAG are nominated in consultation with government officials and some key experts in the region. The STAG membership collectively represents a range of backgrounds, including public health, epidemiology, behavioural science and health economics in Asia-Pacific. A core trait common to all are: (1) competence in data and trend analysis; (2) willingness and ability to commit their time to the project; and (3) allocate necessary time to participate in STAG work, both through meetings and e-forum. The STAG membership is on a rolling-basis - two years, after which another group gets appointed or individual membership renewed on a case-by-case basis.

Interaction with the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), AIDS Economics Technical Reference Group (AETRG) supported by the ADB, and the Monitoring Evaluation Reference Group (MERG) supported by UNAIDS is a critical component of the Science/Technical Advisory Group. These interactions expectedly bring expertise and relevant networks to the regional STAG.

The Science and Technical Advisory Group is chaired by the Regional Director of UNICEF East Asia-Pacific, with the Director of the UNAIDS Regional Support Team for Asia-Pacific serving as Ex-Officio. The Group meets at least once a year to review HIV trends, determine topics for web publication, discuss data quality and harmonization issues, and ensures access to updated data at national and sub-national level. The Group will draw attention to critical data needs and gaps on sex workers and clients, injecting drug users, men having sex with men and also on the progress in the national HIV and AIDS response including prevention, treatment and impact alleviation.
